Inspiring the Sikh community in Birmingham to engage in local and national democracy

This event is to raise the awareness amongst young children, students and adults from the Sikh community in Birmingham in general and in Handsworth in particular of the democratic processes at local, national and European Government levels.

There will be two separate events: one aimed specifically at children in Primary Schools in the area. The programme will include a quiz on democracy and will test children’s awareness of the political parties and the role of local councils and the parliament. An invited MP will inspire youngsters with his/her journey into politics and encourage children to further explore the democratic processes at local and national levels.

The second event will be aimed at students in local secondary schools and local universities and adults from the local community. The programme will include a debate on the reason for the lack of civic engagement amongst the Sikh community and inputs from a local counsellor, a MP and a MEP on their roles and responsibilities.
