UK Parliament Week Launch – Our Trip to Parliament

Our trip to the Houses of Parliament was very enjoyable and educational. During our trip we spoke with many of the other people in the terrace with us, and heard many of their opinions on relevant political debates. We also had the privilege of hearing renowned speakers, most notable the Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow. He discussed issues such as, in his opinion, the frankly unfounded opposition to the Youth Parliament being able to debate inside the House of Commons. He also briefly mentioned the activities and meaning behind Parliament Week, and the huge numbers of schools and other societies involved in it.

Throughout our visit we were constantly surrounded by amazing scenery from the centre of London. These included the infamous London Eye, the Thames viewed from the balcony of the Terrace, Westminster Abbey and of course many of the trademark red double decker buses. While we were walking through the corridor to where the event would take place we saw many pieces of artwork that depicted the country, its rulers and many other prominent figures from the history and the shaping of Great Britain.

To finish, this trip was a highly educational and inspirational experience. It explained many things that I and the other rangers who went did not understand fully. While listening to the speakers we became aware of the importance of  Parliament Week, and what was being done during it. Personally, if I were given an opportunity, I would certainly do this again.
