13 – 19 November 2017

Free screening of Selma for schools

This absorbing drama focuses on a few months in 1965 and King’s involvement in the campaign to secure voting rights for black Americans.

David Oyelowo’s gripping central performance emphasises King’s weaknesses, doubts and pressures as well as his charisma and skilled oratory.

The tight focus of the film places King’s achievements in context, revealing the tactics and conflicts of the wider civil rights movement. Scenes of brutality during protest provide a timely reminder of the violence and urgency of King’s campaign as well as society’s continuing distance from his ideals.
