Charles Walker has been the Member of Parliament for Broxbourne since 2005. He champions mental health issues both across the County of Hertfordshire and in Parliament. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2015 New Year Honours.
Charles Walker has made a great contribution to highlighting mental health issues. He has been living with obsessive-compulsive disorder for more than 30 years and admitted the disability in 2012 during a debate in the House of Commons. He stated in a Guardian article that “declaring that he is a ‘practising fruit cake’ was the best thing he has done in his seven-year parliamentary career, on both the personal and political front.”
He was chair of the all-party parliamentary group on mental health until the 2015 general election.
He has won a number of awards for being an outstanding Parliamentarian as well as being in the Telegraph’s 50 Great Britons.
In November 2013 he was awarded the President’s Medal by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
