“…we want to take practical steps to encourage the participation of girls and young women in politics”
According to Girlguiding’s 2018 Girls’ Attitudes Survey, 28% of girls and young women are put off by politics because of a lack of female politicians.
The survey reports that there is
“increased desire from girls to be taught politics, citizenship and voting compared to 2010, but there are still many reasons why girls are put off politics, including female political representation in the media”.
We’re taking part in UK Parliament Week because we want to take practical steps to encourage the participation of girls and young women in politics, and we can start with our Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers!
Showing girls and young women the significance of our democracy and what it means to them is always an important topic, but in today’s political climate with hot topics like Brexit, education and health care, it is crucial that our next generation is involved. I have recently become Deputy Chair of the Girlguiding LaSER Champions, and we had the amazing opportunity to contribute to the 2019 Parliament Week resource for members of Girlguiding’s London and South East England region.
The Girlguiding LaSER Champions are a group of 14-25-year-old members who make up the advocacy arm of the region. Our aim in this resource is to educate girls on their rights within society and to help them to realise their potential through fun and engaging activities. We hope our members enjoy the pack!
With Girlguiding’s new programme being rolled out in units right now, we were very aware that we wanted to make it easy for leaders to expand on the Parliament Week themes, and have suggested links to the Take Action, Know Myself and Express Myself themes of the new programme. From Rainbows to Rangers, we want to make sure our girls can become empowered and enjoy learning about their local community and the UK Parliament!
If you’re a member of Girlguiding LaSER, let us know that you’ve registered for the pack and how you are getting on using #UKPW and by tagging @Guiding_LaSER on Twitter and @girlguidinglaser on Instagram!
